Fo'c'sle Firkins' Concert

Our next concert is going to be fantastic!  Get yourself along to Little Covent Garden at 3 Lillian Road in Maida Vale for what promises to be one of the best concerts of 2013. 

The (in)famous Fo'c's'le Firkins are getting together in their original line up after 28 years!  This may never happen again, so come and witness a bit of WA Folk History in a fantastic venue. 

All proceeds will be going to Little Folk and will add to the more than $100.000 we have already contributed to Princess Margaret Childrens' Hospital  Cancer Reseach.

House Concert - Sat 28th May

Our next House Concert is on Saturday, 28th May at Landsdale. The concert starts at 7.30 pm.


There will be a wide variety of performers at Karen's house.  Marcus Sturrock, singer-songwriter, is the main guest.

Marcus composes 90% of his songs and tunes and has played at Port Ferry, Woodford, Canberra, Frankston Guitar Festival, Fairbridge, Nannup, Bridgetown, Cygnet, Cobargo, Australian Celtic Festival and many more.

He has composed and played music for dance, visual art and theatre productions, and short film. He taught guitar at Lou Toppano Music College and, as a support worker, provides music therapy for physically and mentally challenged people.


Other performers include Rob and Rita who will be doing some yodelling, Anne Cormack singing traditional Scottish folksongs (mostly), Christine Boult with mainly Aussie recitations and perhaps a song, Ken Kenny reciting some of his own poetry and singing, and a surprise from some Red Hatters that needs to be seen rather than described here.......

Alan Reid and Rob Van Sante (Battlefield Band) House Concert May 15th

One chance only to meet these great musicians.

Alan Reid and Rob Van Sante will present an evening of traditional and contemporary music and song at Noel and Kate's house, East Victoria Park, on Sunday 15 May, starting 7.30pm sharp, support acts will be Phil Beck and Robert Zielinski.

Burns Supper 2010

We held our first Burns Supper on 25th January at Jorgensen Park in Kalamunda.  Around sixty of us enjoyed a great evening of Traditional Scottish Food, Entertainment and Dancing.  The evening went something like this:

The feedback we've had was really positive and we'd like to thank everyone who helped to make the evening such a success: the organisers, the performers, the volunteer chefs, waiters and washer uppers and especially the audience who so obviously enjoyed the strange Scottish proceedings (even when they couldn't understand a word!!)  See you all next year!

Dwellingup 2010

Dwellingup 2010 is getting close - this year we'll be down there from Friday, 19th to Sunday, 21st November. 

Last year’s festival was our best yet and raised over $8000.00 for cancer research. 2010 will be our fifth festival and is promising to continue this success and achieve an even better result.

If you haven’t attended before, the festival is held every November at Banksia Springs Lodge in Dwellingup, and has featured a wide range of talent from WA, interstate and overseas. The range of musical styles presented has been fantastic, encompassing English, Irish and Australian folk, comic a capella, Cajun music and dance, Swiss yodelling, contemporary Australian songwriters and more.

There is a Ceilidh on the Friday night to welcome you to the weekend and get you into festival mode. This is usually followed by a movie or workshop and a late night singing session.

Saturday and Sunday are filled with concerts and workshops – but never more than one performance at a time so you don’t have to miss out on any of the action.

We also find time to fit in popular events from previous years;-  a breakfast concert over cooked bacon and eggs on the deck, a bushwalk on Sunday morning, casual music and singing sessions and a blackboard concert.

We hope you can join us for a fantastic weekend of music, song and dance, and help us make this event Little Folk’s biggest contribution yet to children's cancer research.

GUESTS

Our interstate guests this year are Margaret Walters and Danny Spooner. From WA we'll have Robert Zeilinski, David and Jenny Hoffman, Graham Wilson, Continental Drift (barbershop quartet), Take 3, Norma Holmes, Ken Kenny, Peter (Murf) Murphy and many more.

All of these performers will, as always, be providing their time and talents freely to help add to the $65,000+ we have already raised for children's cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital.

ACCOMMODATION

Camping / Dossing                   $25.00 per person / per night
Beds                                        $50.00 per person / per night

There is plenty of camping available on site. Tents, vans or trailers are welcome in the fantastic grounds of Banksia Springs. There will be power available for most of the sites, and access to the kitchens in the lodge. There is also limited space available in the dosser’s dorm for swags or camp beds. Motor homes can also be accommodated.

Beds in the lodge and cottages are allocated to visiting performers first, after this the remaining beds  will be allocated to the first comers, until they are all gone. Beds are allocated individually in shared rooms of 3 or 4 people.

For those who feel a little less adventurous, there is also a range of accommodation available in Dwellingup, including the Dwellingup Pub - 08 9538 1056, and various chalets, caravan parks and B&B.
Most of these venues are within 5 minutes of the festival site.

MEALS

The only meal available on site is the cooked Breakfast in the Bush on Saturday morning.
This is available for $10 per person and includes:

·         Sausage, Bacon, Eggs (scrambled or fried), Beans, Tomatoes, Mushroom, Toast and Tea or Coffee. 

If you wish to partake, please let us know in advance. (Payment can be made on the weekend.)

All other meals are self-catered.  The kitchen in the lodge can be used, but there are only two stoves so there can be  queue.  
Meals are also available from the pub, café, or supermarket in Dwellingup town. These are only five minutes from the festival site. Menus will be available during the weekend.
There may be soup and/or mulled wine available for a small donation on the Friday and Saturday nights, but aside from this you will need to make your own arrangements.

BOOK SALE

Last year we added a new feature to the weekend in the form of a second-hand book sale.  This proved to be very popular so we will be repeating it this year. 
Browse through a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books and select as many as you want at very reasonable prices.  As usual, all books are donated and the proceeds go to the Princess Margaret Foundation.

House Concert - 4th September 2010

If you missed the House Concert on Saturday, 4th September, you missed an excellent evening.  We had a great variety of performers from poets to unaccompanied singers to fiddlers to groups - everyone, as always, donating their time and talents to benefit others.  Robert Zielinski was his usual virtuoso self, not only on the fiddle, but also on the whistle!!

Ellie Wilkie performed some of her own very amusing poems, accompanied by the paintings that inspired them - as well as some interesting anecdotes - I especially enjoyed the one about the man in the bookshop:)  He probably enjoyed it too!  Ellie very generously donated a proportion of the proceeds from sales of her books, cards and DVDs to Little Folk.  If you get the chance to see her perform, you will be in for a treat!

Jane and Robert performed two duets that were enjoyed by all - we don't often get the chance to hear this type of early church music - short but sweet!

Take 3 made their debut appearance on the night - the general consensus seemed to be favourable.  (I would say they were very good, but I might be accused of bias......) Jean, Fiona and Anne are all Scottish and performed mostly Scottish songs - some traditional and some contemporary, some with conventional topics and some slightly unconventional, like the story of Sawney Bean and his family of incestuous, murdering cannibals!  Definitely different.

Ken sang a couple of amusing Irish songs, followed by a newly written poem with a great twist in the tail - or tale - either applies! Watch this space for news of an upcoming publication.

Murf gave a varied performance - one music hall song, one traditional folk song about a young man doing what young men do (getting young women in "trouble").  His final song was very brave, considering his recent return from the UK and the associated jet lag - Keith Marsden's "The Manch". Murf managed to get to the end in great style, not missing any of the pubs on the extensive pub crawl that is the subject of the song - well done!!

and several of the usual suspects.

Tickets are $10 each and can only be obtained by ringing Karen Ford on 9303 4204 or 0439 844 024. As this is a house concert, numbers are limited and you may like to bring a chair with you in case! Refreshments will be available during the interval.

Little Folk for Little Folk - Children's Concert

The annual Children's Concert was held at the Irish Club on Friday, 6th August and it was the best one yet.  The performers were all terrific - talented and confident as well as being generous to enough to donate their time and talents to a worthy cause.  The grand sum of $2,120 was raised, bringing the total raised for Cancer Research to $65,000 - a great effort by all concerned and a special thanks to Sean Doherty and the Irish Club for their hard work .
